How to Apply for Council Tax Reduction in Nottingham

The Online Portal Is the Main Route

Nottingham City Council has closed its customer service email channel for council tax and benefits enquiries. Phone calls route through automated triage that directs callers to self-service. The online claim form at myaccount.nottinghamcity.gov.uk is the main route, though assisted digital help at Joint Service Centres and paper applications by post are also available.

The online form covers both Council Tax Support and Housing Benefit in a single application. It takes roughly 15 minutes if you have your documents ready, and it is available 24 hours a day.

To start, create a MyAccount login on the Nottingham City Council website. The form asks for your National Insurance number, income details, savings figures, and household composition. You will need to provide supporting evidence. Photocopies are not accepted for income and capital verification; use original documents or verified digital uploads through the official form.

What You Need Before You Start

Gather these before opening the form:

  • Proof of identity — passport, UK driving licence, or birth certificate (originals or verified digital scans)
  • National Insurance number — from a P45, P60, or DWP award letter
  • Income proof — five consecutive weekly payslips, three fortnightly slips, or two monthly slips showing the most recent pay periods
  • Universal Credit statement — the full multi-page PDF showing all elements and deductions, not just the payment summary
  • Bank statements — complete statements for every account (current, savings, ISAs) covering the last two months if your total capital is near or below £6,000
  • Immigration documents — Home Office share code or biometric residence permit if you are a non-UK national who arrived in the UK within the past five years

If required evidence is missing, the council sends a written request giving you one month to supply it. If you miss the deadline, the claim is rejected; you may need to restart the application or appeal the decision.

What Happens After You Submit

The council aims to process complete applications within 14 days. A complete application means every piece of supporting evidence has been uploaded alongside the form — not just the form itself.

Once processed, you receive a decision letter showing exactly how your award was calculated, followed by a revised Council Tax demand notice with updated monthly instalments. The support is credited directly to your council tax account; no separate payment comes to your bank.

Your entitlement starts the Monday after the council receives your application. If you recorded an intention to claim (through the portal or at an advice centre), that date is protected as long as you complete the full application within one month.

If You Cannot Complete the Form Online

Assisted digital services are available at three Joint Service Centre "ASK HERE" desks across Nottingham:

  • Bulwell Riverside Centre — Main Street, Bulwell, NG6 8QJ
  • The Mary Potter Centre — 76 Gregory Boulevard, Hyson Green, NG7 5HY
  • St Ann's Valley Centre — 2 Livingstone Road, St Ann's, NG3 3GG

Staff at these locations help you fill in the online form and verify documents in person. Paper applications can still be posted to: Council Tax Support Scheme and Housing Benefit, Nottingham City Council, Admail 4270, Nottingham, NG1 9YZ.

One Critical Warning

Submitting your application does not pause your council tax bill. Monthly instalments remain legally due while your claim is being assessed. If the award is approved, the credit appears on your next revised demand notice and adjusts future payments downward — but you cannot skip payments while waiting.

For the full claim process — including the £6,000 capital limit, Band B liability cap, and how to backdate your claim — see the Nottingham Council Tax Reduction guide.
