How Long Does Council Tax Support Take in Nottingham?
The 14-Day Target
Nottingham City Council aims to process Council Tax Support claims within 14 days of receiving a complete application with all supporting evidence. That is the target, not a guarantee — actual processing times depend on whether your evidence is complete and how many claims the revenues and benefits team is handling.
The key phrase is "complete application." If any document is missing, processing pauses and the 14-day clock does not meaningfully start until everything is in.
What Causes Delays
The most common reason for slow processing is incomplete evidence. When the council identifies a gap — a missing bank statement, an unclear wage slip, a UC award notice that does not show all elements — they issue a formal written request giving you one month to supply the missing documents. Your claim sits in a queue until you respond.
Nottingham City Council has permanently deactivated its customer service email for council tax and benefit queries. You cannot email missing documents or chase progress by email. Everything goes through the structured online portal at myaccount.nottinghamcity.gov.uk, which processes most routine changes through automated workflows. This automation is fast for standard transactions but creates friction when something does not fit the expected pattern.
Other common delays include:
- Submitting photocopies instead of originals or verified digital uploads — the council requires original documents for income and capital proof
- Incomplete Universal Credit statements — the full multi-page statement showing all elements and deductions is required, not just the payment summary
- Mismatched personal details — if your name or address on the application does not match the council tax account, the system flags it for manual review
What Happens While You Wait
Your council tax bill remains legally due while the application is being assessed. Submitting a claim does not pause your payment obligation. If you are on monthly instalments, continue paying them. If you stop paying while waiting for a decision, the council can issue a reminder notice and eventually a court summons.
Once the claim is processed and an award is made, the support is credited directly to your council tax account. A revised demand notice arrives showing the reduced balance and recalculated monthly instalments. If crediting support leaves an account in credit for a prior tax year, you can request a direct refund from the Revenues section.

How to Avoid the Wait
Submit a complete application the first time. Before you start the online form, gather:
- Proof of identity (passport or driving licence) for you and any partner
- National Insurance numbers for all household members aged 16+
- Five consecutive weekly wage slips, three fortnightly, or two monthly
- Your complete Universal Credit statement if you are on UC
- Full bank statements for all accounts covering the last two months
Having everything ready before you open the portal cuts the typical processing path to the 14-day target. The council's "ASK HERE" desks at Bulwell Riverside, Mary Potter Centre, and St Ann's Valley Centre can verify your documents in person if you are unsure whether your evidence will be accepted.
Chasing a Delayed Claim
If more than 14 days have passed and you have received no decision letter, use the council's online contact form to request a progress update. Reference the claim number from your application acknowledgement.
If the council has not issued a written outcome within two months of receiving your written reconsideration request, you can appeal to the Valuation Tribunal for England — the same body that handles appeals against CTR decisions. Before appealing, you must first ask the council to reconsider its decision.
The Nottingham Council Tax Reduction guide includes an application tracking log and timeline checklist to help you stay on top of deadlines from submission through to decision.
