Newcastle Council Tax Arrears: Free Debt Advice and Where to Get Help
The Enforcement Timeline
Council tax arrears can progress from reminder notices to court action, a liability order, and enforcement. The exact deadlines, costs, and next steps depend on the notice and your account. Contact a free debt adviser promptly and ask the council for your current balance and the date you need to act by.
What You Should Do Right Now
If you are at any stage of this process, the single most important step is to contact a free debt advice service immediately. Do not pay for debt advice — reputable services are free, and there are several in Newcastle specifically equipped to handle council tax debt.

Can You Still Claim Council Tax Support If You Have Arrears?
Yes. Having council tax arrears does not prevent you from applying for Council Tax Reduction going forward. A CTS award reduces your liability from the date your claim is received. It does not wipe out existing arrears, but it reduces what you owe going forward, making the remaining debt more manageable.
If you were entitled to Council Tax Support during the period the arrears built up but did not claim, you may be able to backdate your claim up to six months with continuous good cause. A successful backdating request would retrospectively reduce your bill and could significantly shrink the arrears balance.
The Newcastle Council Tax Reduction guide covers the full claim process, backdating rules, and the Section 13A discretionary hardship fund — which may help if standard CTS still leaves a shortfall you genuinely cannot pay.
One Thing Not to Do
Do not ignore the letters. Options can become more limited as arrears progress toward court action and enforcement. Getting free advice promptly can help you understand what to do next.
