Enfield Council Tax Arrears and Debt Help: Free Advice and What to Expect

The Enforcement Timeline

Council Tax arrears can progress from missed instalments to a summons and liability order. Enfield's notices set out the dates and action for your account. If you have received a summons, liability order, or enforcement contact, seek free debt advice promptly.

What to Do Right Now

If you are at any stage of this process, the single most important step is to contact a free debt advice service immediately. Do not wait for the next letter.

StepChange — 0800 138 1111. Free debt advice for people dealing with arrears.

National Debtline — 0808 808 4000. Free, independent debt advice for households experiencing arrears.

Citizens Advice Enfield — 0800 014 8307. Free independent advice on benefits, debt, and housing. Access is by appointment following phone screening. Wait times can be long, so call early.

These services provide free debt advice. They can help you understand options when you are dealing with Council Tax arrears.

Can Council Tax Reduction Help With Arrears?

Council Tax Support reduces your Council Tax liability for the period covered by the award. If you are entitled to support but have not been claiming it, request backdating (up to 12 months) and an approved award can be credited to your Council Tax account, reducing the balance for that period.

If backdated support is applied to months where you have arrears, it reduces the amount owed for those months. A credit is applied to the Council Tax account; it does not automatically become a cash refund unless the account is in net credit beyond the full year's liability.

What This Guide Does and Does Not Cover

This post covers the practical steps for dealing with Council Tax arrears. If you are behind on your Council Tax, get free debt advice first — that is more urgent than any information product.

If your issue is understanding the Council Tax Reduction scheme itself — how to apply, what you are entitled to, how to backdate or appeal — the Enfield Council Tax Reduction guide covers the full claim process. It is designed for people navigating the application and entitlement system, not for people already in debt enforcement, who need specialist advice.
