Barnet Council Tax Arrears and Debt Help: Where to Get Free Advice

Falling behind on council tax in Barnet can escalate quickly. Check the notice and its deadline, and seek advice promptly if you are unsure what to do.

If You Are Already in Arrears

Read the latest notice carefully: it gives the deadline that applies to your account and explains what Barnet may do next. Contact Barnet promptly if you cannot pay or are unsure what action to take. The exact enforcement steps and costs depend on your case, so do not rely on a general timeline or cost estimate.

What You Should Do First

Contact a free debt advice charity immediately. This is not a step you should skip or delay. The three main services covering Barnet are:

  • StepChange Debt Charity — freephone 0800 138 1111, confidential debt advice and management plans
  • National Debtline — freephone 0808 808 4000, independent debt advice and Breathing Space referrals
  • Citizens Advice Barnet — freephone 0808 250 5708, face-to-face and telephone advice

These organisations can explain your debt options, including repayment plans and whether Breathing Space may be suitable.

Apply for Council Tax Reduction

If you are on a low income and have not applied for Council Tax Reduction, do it now. CTR is applied as a credit to your council tax account, and if approved, it reduces your outstanding balance going forward. If you can demonstrate good cause for not applying earlier, you may be able to backdate your claim for up to six months (working age) or three months (pension age), which would also reduce the arrears.

If your income is too high for CTR or your capital exceeds £6,000, you may still qualify for Council Tax Discretionary Relief (CTDR) — Barnet's hardship fund under Section 13A(1)(c). This is a separate application through the Grant Approval portal, and it requires you to have already claimed all standard discounts and reductions.

What This Guide Does and Does Not Cover

Our Barnet Council Tax Reduction guide covers the claim process, income bands, backdating, the hardship fund, and appeals. It does not cover debt enforcement, liability orders, or bailiff action — those require specialist debt advice from the free charities listed above.

Council tax debt is a priority debt (unlike credit cards or personal loans), which means enforcement powers are stronger and the consequences of ignoring it are more immediate. If you are at any stage of the enforcement process, free debt advice is the right first step.
