Kirklees Council Tax Single Person Discount: How to Get 25% Off Your Bill
What the Single Person Discount Is
If you're the only adult living in your property in Kirklees, you're entitled to a 25% reduction on your council tax bill. It's a statutory discount — not means-tested, not income-dependent. If you live alone, you qualify.
For a Band A property in most of Kirklees, the 2026/27 annual bill is about £1,620. The single person discount knocks roughly £405 off that, bringing it down to about £1,215.
Who Counts (and Who Doesn't)
The discount applies when there's only one "countable" adult aged 18 or over living at the address. But certain people are legally disregarded — they don't count even if they live with you:
- Full-time students (enrolled on a qualifying course)
- People who are severely mentally impaired (with a medical certificate and receiving a qualifying benefit)
- Care leavers under 25 (covered by Kirklees's care leaver exemption)
- Live-in carers (not a spouse, partner, or parent of a child under 18)
- Members of the Armed Forces in certain accommodation
- Apprentices earning no more than the set weekly limit
So if you live with your 19-year-old who's at university full-time, you could still claim the single person discount — they're disregarded for council tax purposes.
How to Apply
Contact Kirklees Council through the council tax section of their website or call 01484 414900. You'll need to declare that you're the only countable adult at the property and provide evidence if asked.
You can also manage this through your MyKirklees account online.

Single Person Discount Plus Council Tax Reduction
These two stack. The single person discount is applied first, reducing your bill by 25%. Then, if you're on a low income, Council Tax Reduction is calculated on the remaining amount.
In the worked example above, a single person in Band A gets the bill reduced from £1,620 to £1,215 through the discount. CTR then covers up to 75% of that £1,215 (about £911), leaving a mandatory minimum of roughly £304 per year.
Without the single person discount, that mandatory minimum would be higher. Make sure you're claiming both if you live alone.
What Happens When Someone Moves In
If another countable adult moves into your property, you lose the discount. You must report this to Kirklees Council — it can recover any discount paid in error. If you also receive Council Tax Reduction, a negligent failure to report a reportable change within 21 days may lead to a £70 civil penalty.
Kirklees runs periodic reviews and cross-checks with electoral roll data to verify single occupancy claims. If you're caught claiming incorrectly, you'll be billed the full amount backdated.
