How Much Council Tax Reduction Can You Get in Kirklees

The Short Answer

Working-age residents in Kirklees can get up to 75% of their council tax bill covered. The remaining 25% is a mandatory minimum payment that applies to everyone, regardless of how low your income is. Pension-age residents can receive up to 100%.

How much you actually get depends on your income, savings, household composition, and which valuation band your property sits in.

How Kirklees Calculates Your Award

The calculation follows a set sequence:

Step 1 — Start with your gross council tax charge. This is based on your property's valuation band, including all precepts (parish council, West Yorkshire Fire Authority, Police).

Step 2 — Apply statutory discounts. If you qualify for the 25% Single Person Discount, a Disabled Band Reduction, or any exemption, these come off first.

Step 3 — Calculate the eligible liability. For working-age claimants, Kirklees takes 75% of the remaining bill. This is the maximum amount your CTR can cover.

Step 4 — Run the means test. The council compares your assessed income against your "applicable amount" — a baseline figure that varies by household type. If your income is at or below this figure, you get the full 75% reduction.

Step 5 — Apply the 20% taper. If your income exceeds the applicable amount, the council deducts 20% of the excess from your weekly award. The more you earn above the threshold, the less CTR you receive.

Worked Example: Single Person on UC, No Earnings

A single person living in a Band A property in most parts of Kirklees faces an annual bill of about £1,620. With the 25% Single Person Discount, the net liability drops to roughly £1,215.

The 75% eligible liability is about £911 per year. With no income above the applicable amount, this person gets the full £911 reduction and pays the remaining £304 — about £25 per month across 12 instalments.

Worked Example: Couple With Variable Earnings

A couple in a Band B property (annual bill roughly £1,890) has no single person discount. The 75% eligible liability is about £1,418 per year (£27.18 per week).

If their assessed earnings exceed the applicable amount by £30 per week, the 20% taper deducts £6 per week from the award. Their weekly CTR drops to £21.18, giving an annual award of about £1,105. They'd pay roughly £785 per year — the £473 mandatory minimum plus £313 from the income taper.

What Counts as Income

Kirklees looks at:

  • Net earnings after tax, National Insurance, and half of any pension contributions
  • Self-employment net profits from trading accounts
  • Most social security benefits

What's disregarded:

  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP) — both components
  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA) — both components
  • Attendance Allowance
  • War Disablement Pensions and War Widow's Pensions

These disability-related payments don't count toward the income that triggers the taper.

The Capital Cut-Off

Working-age claimants with savings above £8,000 get nothing — it's a hard cut-off, not a taper. Pension-age claimants have a £16,000 limit, waived if receiving Guarantee Credit.
