What's Included in Your Bill

Your council tax charge bundles several elements together:

  • Kirklees Council — the biggest share, covering local services
  • West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner precept — policing
  • West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority precept — fire services
  • Parish or town council precept — only in parished areas (Denby Dale, Holme Valley, Kirkburton, Meltham, Mirfield)

The "All other areas" rate is lower because those areas don't have a parish precept.

How Bands Are Set

Property valuations are based on what your home would have been worth on 1 April 1991 — even though the market has changed dramatically since. Band A covers properties valued up to £40,000 at that date, while Band H covers properties over £320,000.

If you think your property is in the wrong band, you can challenge it through the Valuation Office Agency (VOA). This is free to do, but be aware that the VOA can move your band up as well as down.

Reducing Your Bill

Several discounts and reductions can lower what you pay:

  • Single Person Discount — 25% off if you're the only countable adult
  • Council Tax Reduction — up to 75% for working-age residents on low income, up to 100% for pension-age residents
  • Disabled Band Reduction — your property is charged at one band lower if it's adapted for a disabled resident
  • Student exemption — full exemption if all residents are full-time students

These apply in order: discounts first, then CTR is calculated on what's left.

Our Kirklees Council Tax Reduction guide explains exactly how each discount and reduction interacts, with worked examples for every band, so you can calculate what you'll actually pay after all reductions are applied.
