Enfield Council Tax Bands and Rates 2026/27: What You Pay by Property Band

How Council Tax Bands Work in Enfield

Every residential property in Enfield is assigned a Council Tax band — A through H — based on what the property would have sold for on 1 April 1991. The Valuation Office Agency (VOA) sets these bands, not Enfield Council.

The bands determine your annual Council Tax charge. Band D is the reference point, and every other band is expressed as a fraction of Band D. Band A pays two-thirds of the Band D rate; Band H pays twice the Band D rate.

For 2026/27, Enfield's total Council Tax charge reflects contributions to Enfield Council, the Greater London Authority, and the adult social care precept. The council approved a 4.99% increase for this financial year.

Why the Band C Cap Matters

Enfield's Council Tax Reduction scheme caps support at the Band C liability level. If you live in a Band D, E, F, G, or H property, your maximum reduction is still calculated on the Band C amount. The difference between your actual band and Band C comes entirely out of your pocket.

For a Band D property, the gap is modest. For a Band G or H property, it can add hundreds of pounds to your annual bill on top of the 50% minimum payment.

If you live in Band A or B, the cap does not hurt you — your liability is already below Band C, so the reduction is calculated on your actual (lower) amount.

Can You Challenge Your Band?

If you believe your property is in the wrong band, you can challenge it through the Valuation Office Agency — not through Enfield Council. The VOA considers challenges based on:

  • Comparable properties in your street or area being in a lower band
  • Physical changes to the property since 1991 that reduce its value (demolition of an extension, for example)
  • A new property that has never been banded, or one where the banding is clearly out of line

The challenge is free. Commercial "band challenge" companies charge a percentage of any refund you receive, but the VOA process costs nothing to use directly. Be aware that a challenge can result in your band going up as well as down — the VOA reassesses from scratch.

A band challenge is separate from Council Tax Reduction. Even if your challenge succeeds and your band drops, you still need to apply for Council Tax Support separately to get the means-tested reduction.

Reductions and Discounts That Stack

Several discounts can apply on top of, or alongside, Council Tax Reduction:

  • Single Person Discount: 25% off if you are the only adult counted for Council Tax purposes in the property
  • Disabled Band Reduction: moves your bill down one band if you or someone in your household meets specific disability criteria
  • Severe Mental Impairment disregard: the person with SMI is not counted for Council Tax purposes, which can trigger the Single Person Discount

These discounts are applied before Council Tax Reduction is calculated. A Band D property with the Disabled Band Reduction is charged at the Band C rate, and then the 50% cap applies to that Band C figure.

The Enfield Council Tax Reduction guide explains how all these reductions interact with the main Council Tax Support scheme and includes a calculator worksheet for working out your actual bill after every applicable discount.
