Enfield Council Tax Reduction Income Limit 2026: Bands, 50% Cap, and Minimum Payment
The 50% Cap: Enfield's Headline Rule
For the 2026/27 financial year, Enfield caps the standard Council Tax Support award for most working-age residents at 50% of the Band C liability. This is the single most important number in the scheme. Even if you have zero income and zero savings, a standard working-age claimant still pays at least half of the Band C liability; protected groups can receive up to 100%.
On a Band C property with a gross annual charge of £2,080, the maximum reduction is £1,040. You pay the remaining £1,040 — roughly £104 per month across ten instalments, or £87 across twelve if you request monthly payments.
The only working-age exemptions from the 50% cap are war widows/widowers and single claimants under 25, who can receive up to 100%.
How the Band C Ceiling Works
The 50% cap is calculated against Band C, not your actual property band. If you live in a Band D property billed at £2,340 per year, Enfield still caps your maximum support at 50% of the Band C amount (£1,040). You pay the full £260 difference between Band D and Band C, plus the £1,040 minimum. Your total bill becomes £1,300, not £1,170.
This matters for anyone living in Bands D through H. The higher your band, the larger the gap between your bill and the maximum support.
Two Different Calculation Methods
Enfield runs two parallel systems depending on your benefit status:
UC earned income bands apply if you receive Universal Credit with any earned income. Your net weekly earnings place you in one of six bands. Band 1 (zero earnings) gives the full 50%. Band 6 (over £214.70/week for a single person) gives only 10%. The thresholds are higher for couples and families.
The 22.5% taper rate applies to working-age claims assessed under Enfield's standard means-testing rules rather than the UC earned-income bands. The council calculates your "applicable amount" — the government's estimate of what you need to live on — and compares it to your net income. For every £1 your income exceeds your applicable amount, your Council Tax Reduction drops by 22.5p.

Income That Counts vs. Income That Does Not
Not all money counts as income for the assessment:
Counted: wages, salary, self-employed net earnings, some state benefits, occupational pensions, rental income
Disregarded: Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Attendance Allowance, Child Benefit, War Disablement Pensions. These benefits are invisible to the calculation.
Savings and capital are assessed separately. The absolute cutoff is £16,000 — if your total capital (bank accounts, ISAs, investments, property you do not live in) exceeds this, you are ineligible regardless of income. Between the lower and upper capital limits, a "tariff income" rule adds a notional weekly income to your assessment.
The Minimum Weekly Award Threshold
If the final calculation produces a weekly entitlement below £0.50, the award is rounded to zero. You receive nothing. This matters mainly for applicants whose income is just slightly over the threshold — the taper rate can reduce your entitlement to a few pence per week, which then gets zeroed out.
What This Means in Practice
A single working-age person on UC with £80 per week net earned income living in a Band C property falls into Band 3. Their maximum reduction is 40%, leaving them paying £1,248 per year. If they also have a non-dependant adult son earning over £511 per week in the household, the £24.60 weekly deduction could wipe the entire award.
Understanding exactly where you sit across the income bands, the taper, and the deduction rules determines whether your claim is worth making — and how much you can expect.
