Edinburgh Council Tax Reduction: Application, Evidence and Deadlines

Edinburgh's Application System

City of Edinburgh Council uses the mygovscot myaccount system for CTR applications. You log in through the central authentication portal, which gives you access to submit your claim, upload evidence, view benefit notices, and track your application progress online.

Edinburgh applies the same national Scottish CTR rules as every other council — the difference is in how you interact with the system and a specific procedural deadline that catches many applicants off guard.

The One-Month Review Deadline

Edinburgh operates a strict review timeline. When the council sends you a Housing Benefit/CTR review form, you have one calendar month to complete the online declaration.

Here's what happens if you miss it:

  • After one month: your CTR can be suspended
  • After two months: your claim can be terminated
  • To reinstate: you need to submit a formal written dispute within one month of termination

This isn't a national rule — it's Edinburgh's local administrative process. But the consequences are real. A suspended or terminated claim means your council tax bill reverts to the full amount, and you'll need to reapply or dispute to get your reduction back.

What Evidence to Upload

Edinburgh accepts document uploads through the myaccount portal. Scan or photograph documents clearly — blurry mobile photos of crumpled bank statements cause delays. You'll need:

  • Identity verification: passport, UK driving licence, or birth certificate
  • Tenancy or ownership proof: your lease, land register title, or mortgage statement
  • Income evidence: payslips (five weekly or two monthly), P60, or self-employment accounts
  • UC award breakdown: the full statement from your UC online journal
  • Bank and savings statements: two consecutive months for every account, including current accounts, savings accounts, and ISAs
  • Benefit award letters: for any disability benefits (Adult Disability Payment, Pension Age Disability Payment, Carer Support Payment) or Pension Credit

Upload everything at once if you can. Submitting documents in batches can cause the system to mark your application as incomplete while the additional evidence is being matched to your file.

  3. Complete the CTR application — household details, income, savings, who lives with you
  4. Upload all supporting evidence
  5. Submit and save your reference number

If you've just claimed Universal Credit, submit Edinburgh's CTR application within one month of your UC claim date to protect your earliest possible start date.

Checking Your Decision

Edinburgh will issue a formal decision notice through the portal. Check it carefully — it should show the weekly award amount, income assessment breakdown, and any non-dependant deductions applied.

If the figures look wrong, you have two calendar months from the decision date to request an internal review. Don't delay — the two-month window is a hard statutory deadline that cannot be extended by phone calls or service complaints.
