Coventry Council Tax Arrears Help: Free Advice and Payment Options

Act Before It Escalates

Council tax debt in Coventry can progress through formal notices and enforcement, and each stage can make the situation harder and more expensive to resolve. The sooner you act, the more options you have.

Missed payments can lead to formal notices, a court summons, and enforcement action. If you receive a summons or notice of enforcement, contact the council or a free debt advice service promptly. The next steps depend on your account and payment history.

A 2024 discussion on r/coventry mentioned £27 million in uncollected council tax debt. That is a historical community report, not a current official council balance. You're not alone in struggling, and the council has mechanisms to help — but you need to engage with them rather than ignoring the letters.

Contact the Council First

Call the Revenues Team on 024 7683 1111 or use the online "Council Tax Enquiries Form" on coventry.gov.uk. Ask whether the council can set up a payment plan to spread your arrears over manageable instalments.

You can also request to pay your current year's council tax over 12 monthly instalments instead of the standard 10. This is a statutory right — the council must offer it if you ask. Available collection dates are the 1st, 10th, 17th, or 24th of each month by direct debit.

If you haven't claimed Council Tax Support and you're on a low income, apply immediately. You may be eligible for up to 80% off your current bill, and you can request backdating for up to 12 months — which could wipe out some or all of your arrears.

Hardship Relief for Extreme Cases

If you're already receiving maximum Council Tax Support (Band 1, 80% off) and still can't afford the remaining 20%, Coventry City Council can apply discretionary relief under Section 13A of the Local Government Finance Act 1992. This can reduce or write off your remaining liability entirely.

The application requires a full income and expenditure breakdown, and approval is at the council's discretion. Apply through the "Council Tax Section 13A Application" on coventry.gov.uk.

The Crisis and Resilience Fund may also help stabilise your broader financial situation if you're in severe hardship.

If Enforcement Agents Have Been Instructed

If enforcement agents have been instructed or have visited, contact one of the free advice services above immediately. A debt adviser can help you understand the options available in your circumstances.

The Coventry Council Tax Reduction guide covers what to do at each enforcement stage and includes a directory of all free local and national support services available in Coventry.
