Council Tax Reduction When Moving House in North Northamptonshire

Moving house affects your council tax reduction whether you're staying within North Northamptonshire or leaving for a different council area. Your existing award doesn't follow you automatically — you need to act within specific timeframes to avoid a gap in support.

Moving Within North Northamptonshire

If you move from one address to another within the NNC area (say, from Kettering to Corby, or from one street in Wellingborough to another), your council tax reduction claim at the old address ends on the date you move out. You need to tell NNC about the move through their online portal at northnorthants.gov.uk or by calling 0300 126 3000.

NNC can then assess your council tax reduction at the new address. Because you're staying within the same billing authority, it may already have some of your details on file. Ask NNC what evidence it needs for the new address, including proof of your new tenancy or ownership and any changes to your household (a partner who moved with you, a non-dependant who didn't).

If you submit your new application within one calendar month of moving in and becoming liable for council tax at the new address, NNC can start your entitlement from the date your liability began. Miss that one-month window and your entitlement starts from the Monday after they receive your application instead.

Moving To North Northamptonshire From Another Council

If you're moving into the area from a different council — say, from West Northamptonshire, or from another county entirely — your previous council's award stops and you must apply fresh to NNC. The two councils don't transfer claims between them.

Apply as soon as possible after your move. Gather the same evidence you'd need for any new application: ID, National Insurance number, two months of bank statements, payslips or UC award statements, and your new council tax reference number when available.

The first-contact provision applies here too. If you phone NNC on move-in day to say you intend to claim, then submit the full application within one month, the claim date is backdated to that first phone call.

Moving Out of North Northamptonshire

Tell NNC about your departure date so they can close your council tax account and stop your reduction. If you don't, and the council continues crediting your account with a reduction after you've left, they'll recover the excess once they discover the error.

At your new address in a different council area, you'll need to apply from scratch to that council's own scheme. Every English council has its own working-age CTR rules — different minimum payments, different capital thresholds, different tapers. The 75% cap and 25% minimum in North Northamptonshire won't necessarily apply at your new address.

Overlapping Liability

If there's a gap or overlap between when your old tenancy ends and your new one starts, your council tax liability may cover both addresses for a short period. This is common with rental properties where the tenancy end date and the actual move-out date don't align. Make sure both periods are covered: tell NNC the exact dates you're liable at each address, and provide your tenancy agreement or landlord's confirmation letter.

Don't Forget Other Discounts

A move is a good time to check whether your household situation has changed in a way that affects other discounts. If you've separated from a partner and are now the only adult in the property, apply for the 25% Single Person Discount at the new address. If your new home has been adapted for a disability, check whether a Disabled Band Reduction applies — this lowers your bill by one council tax band.
