Council Tax When Moving to Lambeth: New Tenant and New Resident Guide
The Bill Shock Is Real
If you're moving from a lower-rate borough — Wandsworth, Westminster, or the City of London — your council tax bill in Lambeth will be noticeably higher. Lambeth's Band D rate is roughly double Wandsworth's, and that gap runs through every band. Online forums are full of new Lambeth residents who didn't budget for the jump.
The increase isn't because your property is valued higher. Council tax bands are based on 1991 property values and the band stays with the property. The rate per band is what differs between boroughs, and Lambeth's annual charge reflects its spending and funding position.
What to Do When You Move In
Register for council tax immediately. If you rent, council-tax liability can start on the tenancy start date rather than the day you physically move in. Lambeth should send you a bill within a few weeks, but don't wait — contact the council through the MyLambeth portal or call 0345 302 2312 to register. Delays in registration can result in a lump-sum demand for months of missed payments.
Set up a MyLambeth account. You'll need this for most council tax interactions, including viewing your bill, applying for discounts, and submitting Council Tax Reduction claims. Registration requires your name, email, address, and council tax account number (which appears on your first bill).
Claim single person discount if you live alone. If you're the only adult in the property, apply for the 25% single person discount straight away. It can be backdated, but applying early avoids the hassle.
If You Were Claiming Council Tax Reduction Elsewhere
Council Tax Reduction doesn't transfer between boroughs. Each council runs its own local scheme with different rules, income thresholds, and maximum discounts. When you move to Lambeth, you need to submit a fresh application under Lambeth's 2026/27 income-banded scheme.
Lambeth's scheme normally caps working-age support at 73.5% of the bill (for households with zero net earned income). A separate statutory exemption or discretionary hardship relief may reduce the amount due further; otherwise, working-age claimants pay at least 26.5% of their council tax liability. If your previous borough offered a higher maximum — some still offer up to 100% for working-age claimants — your support in Lambeth may be lower.
Apply for CTR as soon as you have your Lambeth council tax account number. The earlier you apply, the earlier your award starts — and if you apply promptly, you won't lose weeks of support during the transition.

Moving Within Lambeth
If you're moving between addresses within the borough, you still need to notify Lambeth Council. Your council-tax liability depends on who is liable under the rules and on your tenancy dates, so moving day may not be the date liability starts or ends. With a fixed-term tenancy of six months or more, you may remain liable until the tenancy or notice period ends even after moving out. Check the dates on both bills with Lambeth.
If you have an active Council Tax Reduction claim, report the move as a change of circumstances. Lambeth's 21-day reporting rule applies — failing to report within 21 days risks a £70 civil penalty. Lambeth requires a claim adjustment or a new application for an address change; the council may reassess if your household composition or housing costs have changed.
Moving Out of Lambeth
If you're a tenant, you may remain liable for Lambeth council tax until your tenancy or notice period ends, even if you move out earlier. If you own the property, liability generally ends when the sale completes. Ask Lambeth to confirm your final liability date, then close your account and get a final bill. If you're moving to another borough, register for council tax there immediately and apply for any local CTR scheme separately.
Any overpayment on your Lambeth account should be refunded. If you had Council Tax Reduction, the award ends on your move-out date.
