Council Tax Help After Redundancy in North Northamptonshire
Losing your job is one of the most common triggers for council tax reduction claims in North Northamptonshire. If your household income has just dropped sharply, you may qualify for up to 75% off your council tax bill — but only if you actually apply. The award doesn't happen automatically.
Apply Immediately — Don't Wait for Universal Credit
The moment your income drops, go to northnorthants.gov.uk and submit a Council Tax Reduction application through the Benefits portal. Your entitlement starts from the Monday after NNC receives your claim. Every week you delay is a week of full council tax you'll owe.
If you phone the council first (0300 126 3000) to say you intend to apply, and then submit the full application within one calendar month, the council can treat your claim date as the date of that first phone call. This "first contact" provision is worth knowing if you need time to gather documents.
Claiming Universal Credit through the DWP does not create a council tax reduction claim. You must apply to NNC separately. This is the single biggest mistake people make after redundancy — assuming UC covers everything.
What You'll Need
NNC processes claims faster when the evidence is complete from the start. After redundancy, gather:
- Your P45 or final payslip showing your employment end date
- Your redundancy payment details (tell NNC about it, as it may affect your capital assessment and the £16,000 limit)
- Your latest UC award statement, if you've already claimed
- Two months of bank statements for every account you hold
- Your council tax reference number (on your annual demand notice)
If your savings including the redundancy payment exceed £16,000, you won't qualify for council tax reduction until they drop below that ceiling. Between £6,000 and £16,000, a "tariff income" of £1 per week for every £250 above £6,000 is added to your assessed income.
How Much You'll Get
Under the standard working-age scheme, zero earned income (or income below your applicable amount) can qualify you for the maximum award: 75% of your net council tax liability. The remaining 25% is yours to pay unless a further discretionary reduction applies.
For a Band D property at £1,918.23/year, that 25% minimum works out to about £479.56 per year. If you also qualify for the Single Person Discount (because you're the only adult in the property), the 25% is calculated on the discounted bill instead — £359.67/year for Band D.

Backdating If You Didn't Apply Straight Away
If redundancy happened a few weeks ago and you're only applying now, you can request backdating of up to one calendar month. You'll need to show continuous "good cause" throughout the backdated period. The scheme examples include severe physical or mental illness supported by a medical practitioner, unexpected hospital admission, or bereavement involving an immediate family member. Not knowing that CTR had to be claimed separately from UC is not a qualifying reason under the stated test.
Beyond one month, standard backdating isn't available for working-age claimants. This is why applying as soon as possible matters so much.
Other Help While You're Between Jobs
Council tax reduction is one piece. Also check whether you qualify for:
- Single Person Discount (25% off your bill) if you're now the only adult in your home
- Section 13A hardship relief if even the 25% minimum is unmanageable — this is NNC's discretionary fund for extreme financial difficulty
- NNC Crisis and Resilience Fund — a separate emergency fund (£4.5 million budget for 2026/27) for food, energy, and essential household costs
