Council Tax Arrears Help in Doncaster: What to Do
The Enforcement Timeline
Council tax arrears can involve reminder or final notices, a liability order, and referral to enforcement agents. The exact steps and deadlines depend on your account and the notices you receive, so follow each notice and contact the Council Tax team as soon as you fall behind.
If a balance stays unpaid, the council may apply to the Magistrates' Court for a liability order. A liability order is not a criminal conviction, but it gives the council recovery tools such as attachment of earnings, deductions from benefits, or referral to enforcement agents. Fees may be added if enforcement agents are instructed.
The earlier you act, the more time you have to contact the council and a free debt advice service.
Setting Up a Payment Plan
Even after a liability order, contact the City of Doncaster Council to ask about a payment arrangement. The council says its staff will try to set arrangements that take your circumstances into account. Call the Council Tax team on 01302 734454 and have your council tax reference number, a clear picture of your monthly income and expenses, and a proposed repayment amount ready.
Any payment arrangement depends on your circumstances. Be honest about what you can pay. Offering an unrealistically high amount to appease the recovery team, then missing it, just restarts enforcement and damages your credibility.
If your income has dropped since the arrears built up, check whether you now qualify for Council Tax Reduction. Applying does not suspend your duty to pay the instalments on your current bill, so contact the council about arrears at the same time. You can also ask the council to backdate your reduction by up to six months if you had good cause for not claiming sooner.
Free Debt Advice — Use It
This is not the kind of problem to sort out alone, especially if a liability order is already in place. Three services offer free advice:
Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough — 01302 243057 (Monday to Friday, 9am–4pm). Based at the Civic Office, Waterdale, Doncaster DN1 3BU. They can write to the council on your behalf, negotiate payment plans, and check whether you are receiving all the benefits you are entitled to.
StepChange Debt Charity — 0800 138 1111. National service with specialist council tax debt advisers. They can set up a formal debt management plan if you have multiple debts beyond council tax.
National Debtline — 0808 808 4000. Free telephone advice with downloadable fact sheets on council tax enforcement, liability orders, and bailiff rights.

The Section 13A Hardship Route
If your arrears are the result of an extreme and sudden crisis — a major illness, job loss, domestic abuse, bereavement — you may qualify for a discretionary reduction under Section 13A. This is a separate application to the council. The council considers hardship relief after statutory discounts, reductions, and Council Tax Reduction have been checked, and asks for income and expenditure evidence.
Section 13A reductions are discretionary and a fund of last resort. The council assesses each request on its circumstances and evidence.
