How to Backdate Council Tax Reduction in Milton Keynes
The Six-Month Backdating Window
Working-age Council Tax Reduction in Milton Keynes can be backdated for up to six months from the date the council receives your written request. This is significantly more generous than Housing Benefit backdating, which is capped at just one calendar month for working-age claimants.
Backdating is not automatic. You must make a specific written request and demonstrate what the council calls "continuous good cause" for the entire period you want covered.
What Continuous Good Cause Means
The legal test asks whether a reasonable person in your circumstances — your age, health, and situation — would also have failed to apply sooner. The council assesses this across the full backdating period, not just at a single point.
Grounds that typically satisfy the test include:
- Severe physical illness or hospitalisation that prevented you from applying
- A mental health crisis that impaired your ability to manage administrative tasks
- Bereavement of an immediate family member
- Receiving incorrect advice from an official body (the council itself, DWP, or a benefits agency) that led you to believe you were ineligible
Ignorance of your legal right to CTR does not, by itself, constitute good cause. The council considers the explanation across the whole period and decides each request individually.
How to Submit a Backdating Request
Your request must be in writing. Include:
- Your full name, address, and Council Tax reference number
- The exact period you want backdated (for example, "from 1 May 2026 to 31 October 2026")
- A clear narrative explaining why you could not apply earlier, covering the entire period
- Supporting evidence: hospital discharge letters, GP notes, DWP correspondence showing incorrect advice, a letter from a social worker or support worker
Submit this through the Milton Keynes benefits portal or email it to [email protected]. Keep a copy and note the date you sent it — the six-month window runs backward from this date, not from when your financial need started.

Pension-Age Backdating Is Different
If you have reached State Pension Credit qualifying age, your CTR can be automatically backdated up to three months without any good-cause requirement. You do not need to provide a reason — the council applies it as part of the standard assessment.
What Happens If Backdating Succeeds
If approved, the council recalculates your Council Tax account for the backdated period. The credit appears on your bill, and your remaining instalments are adjusted downward. If you have already paid the full amount for the backdated period, you can request a cash refund of the overpayment.
If the council refuses your backdating request, you can challenge the decision through the statutory grievance process and, if necessary, appeal to the Valuation Tribunal for England.
