How to Backdate Council Tax Reduction in Hounslow
The One-Month Limit for Working-Age Claims
Hounslow allows working-age Council Tax Reduction claims to be backdated by a maximum of one calendar month. That's measured from the date the council receives your written backdating request — not from when you started struggling to pay, and not from when you first became eligible.
Pension-age claimants get three months of automatic backdating with no questions asked. Working-age residents face a tighter window and a higher burden of proof.
You Need to Show Good Cause
Backdating isn't automatic for working-age applicants. You need to demonstrate "good cause" — a reason that would have prevented a reasonable person in your situation from claiming sooner. The council evaluates this for every day of the backdating period, so your reason needs to cover the entire stretch continuously.
Reasons the council typically accepts:
- Serious illness or hospitalisation — yours or a close family member's
- Mental health crisis — documented by a GP or mental health professional
- Bereavement — the death of a partner or close relative during the period
- Incorrect advice — being told by the DWP or council staff that you didn't need to apply separately
Reasons that generally don't qualify: not knowing about the scheme, being too busy, or assuming Universal Credit covered it. The last one trips up many UC claimants — the DWP notification to the council is not treated as a claim, and ignorance of that fact isn't usually accepted as good cause.
How to Submit a Backdating Request
Include the backdating request in your online application through the Hounslow portal, or send it by email to [email protected]. Your request should state:
- The specific dates you want the claim backdated to
- The reason you couldn't apply sooner, covering the entire period
- Any supporting evidence — a GP letter, hospital discharge summary, DWP correspondence, or a record of the incorrect advice you received
Be specific. "I was unwell" is weaker than "I was admitted to West Middlesex Hospital on [date] and discharged on [date]; GP letter attached confirming I was unable to manage administrative tasks during this period."

The UC Linking Rule — Easier Than Backdating
If you've just claimed Universal Credit, there's a simpler route that avoids the good-cause test entirely. Apply for Council Tax Reduction within one calendar month of your UC claim date, and Hounslow backdates your council tax support to match when your UC started. No good-cause argument needed.
This linking rule only works for new UC claims. If you've been on UC for months and only now realise you need a separate council tax application, you're back to the standard backdating route with the good-cause requirement.
What Backdating Is Worth
On a Band D property with Band 1 support (75%), one month of backdated council tax reduction is worth roughly £130. For someone who qualified for months but never applied, the one-month cap means all but one month of that eligibility is permanently lost.
Our Hounslow Council Tax Reduction guide includes a backdating request template and walks through the good-cause evidence that Hounslow actually accepts.
