Council Tax When Moving House in Wakefield
Setting Up Your Council Tax Account
When you move to a property in the Wakefield district, you need to register for council tax with Wakefield Council. This applies whether you're moving from another council area or from a different address within Wakefield.
Register through Wakefield Council's website or call Customer Services on 0345 8 506 506. You'll need your new address, move-in date, and details of everyone who will be living at the property. If you're moving within Wakefield, also notify the council of your departure from the old address so they can close that account and issue a final bill.
Wakefield Council will send you a new demand notice showing your council tax band, the annual charge, and the instalment schedule for the remainder of the financial year. If you're liable at both the old and new property during an overlap, you may have to pay council tax on both for that period.
Transferring Your Council Tax Support Claim
If you move within Wakefield, report your new address to the council through your Wakefield My Account or its change-of-circumstances service. The existing CTS award transfers to the new liability address and is adjusted for the daily liability; you do not need to submit a new claim.
If you're moving into Wakefield from another council area, submit a new CTS application under Wakefield's scheme; your old council's decision does not determine your Wakefield award. Wakefield's 2026/27 scheme has its own income bands (up to 70% support if your non-DWP income is £55/week or under), its own capital limit (£6,000), and its own non-dependant deduction rate (£7.50/week).
For a standard new claim, entitlement normally starts on the Monday after the council receives your application. If you apply in the same Monday-to-Sunday benefit week that your Council Tax liability begins at the new property, entitlement starts on the date that liability begins.
The Gap Problem
If you apply after your Council Tax liability begins, the award may not cover the earlier days unless the council grants backdating.
Working-age claimants can request backdating for up to four weeks before the council receives the written request. They must show continuous "good cause" for not applying earlier throughout the period requested.
If you're moving into Wakefield from another council area, submit a new CTS application promptly once you can provide your Wakefield Council Tax details. If you're moving within the district, report your address change as soon as possible.

Universal Credit and Moving
If you're on Universal Credit and you move, update your address with both the DWP (through your UC journal) and Wakefield Council separately. A recent UC claim that requested help with Council Tax can trigger an automatic CTS assessment. If you have recently claimed UC and do not receive a revised bill within six weeks of that UC claim, submit a manual CTS application through Wakefield's portal.
Moving can also trigger a UC reassessment that changes your housing element. This doesn't directly affect your CTS (Wakefield disregards all DWP income), but it's worth tracking your UC journal to confirm the transition went through cleanly.
Single Person Discount When Moving
If you're moving into a property as the sole adult, apply for the 25% single person discount at the same time you register for council tax. The SPD is separate from CTS — both reduce your bill, and the SPD is applied before CTS is calculated, shrinking the base your support percentage is applied to.
If you had the SPD at your old address, it does not carry over. Apply again for the new property.
