$0 Wakefield Council Tax Reduction Checklist

How to Apply for Council Tax Support in Wakefield Online

Before You Start

You need three things ready before opening the application:

  1. Your 10-digit Council Tax reference number — printed on your Council Tax demand notice (the annual bill that arrives each March/April)
  2. A Wakefield My Account login — create one on the council website if you don't have one, then link your Council Tax reference
  3. Your evidence documents — digital copies or clear photos of the items listed below

If you can't find your reference number, call Wakefield Council on 0345 8 506 506 and they'll look it up from your name and address.

The Application Steps

The claim goes through Wakefield Council's secure online portal, powered by NEC Software Solutions:

  1. Go to the Council Tax Support page on wakefield.gov.uk
  2. Log in to your Wakefield My Account
  3. Link your Council Tax reference number (if not already linked)
  4. Complete the digital application — household details, capital declaration, non-DWP income, DWP benefits
  5. Upload supporting evidence
  6. Submit and note your Online Claim Reference Number
  7. You'll receive an automated confirmation email

The form asks about everyone in the household: your partner's income and savings (if applicable), any non-dependant adults living with you, and all sources of income — DWP and non-DWP.

What Evidence to Upload

Document type What's needed
Identity Passport, photocard driving licence, or birth certificate
National Insurance DWP letter, P60, or payslip showing your NINO
Savings/capital Bank statements for all accounts — last 2 full months (must show balance is at or below £6,000)
Earned income 5 consecutive weekly payslips, 3 fortnightly, or 2 monthly
Self-employed income SA302 tax calculation, business bank statements, accounts
Private pensions Annual pension statement or pension payslip

Upload clear, legible images. The portal has file size and format restrictions — if a phone photo of a wage slip is rejected, try scanning it or converting to PDF. Make sure every page is readable and shows the relevant figures.

If You Can't Apply Online

Not everyone can manage a digital application. Alternative routes include:

  • Phone: Call 0345 8 506 506 (Wakefield Council Customer Services)
  • In person: Visit a Wakefield District Housing hub — Wakefield (The Bullring, WF1 1HA), Pontefract (1 Horsefair, WF8 1PE), Airedale (Stansfield Road, WF10 3BY), or South Elmsall (Exchange Street, WF9 2RD)

If you need someone else to manage your claim, they'll need a signed Written Letter of Authority or the council's Consent Form. Password sharing on your My Account is not allowed.

How Long It Takes

There's no published processing target for CTS applications. If, during your Universal Credit claim, you request help with Council Tax, the DWP notification to the council should trigger an assessment — but if you don't see a revised bill within six weeks of your UC claim, submit the standalone online CTS application.

For standalone applications (not linked to a UC claim), expect to wait several weeks. If the council needs additional evidence, they'll contact you — respond promptly, because delays can push back your start date.

When Your Support Starts

Entitlement begins on the Monday after the council receives your application. If you apply in the same week that your Council Tax liability starts at a new property, it runs from the exact date liability commenced.

That start date matters because working-age backdating is limited to four weeks. Applying promptly means you don't leave money on the table.

The Wakefield Council Tax Reduction guide has the full application walkthrough with an evidence preparation checklist, mobile photo tips for the upload portal, and a tracker for monitoring your claim's progress.
