Strathcona County Seniors Property Tax Rebate

Strathcona County is one of the few Alberta municipalities that offers its own direct property tax rebate for seniors — a $250 non-repayable credit on top of anything you receive from the provincial deferral program. Most Alberta seniors do not know it exists.

The Rebate at a Glance

  • Amount: $250 per year, applied directly to your property tax account
  • Type: Non-repayable grant — you do not pay it back
  • Eligibility: Homeowner aged 65 or older, residing in Strathcona County as their primary residence
  • 2026 income limits: Single household income at or below $33,675; couple household income at or below $40,984 (based on the 2025 CRA Notice of Assessment)
  • Administered by: Strathcona County Family & Community Services

Unlike the provincial Seniors Property Tax Deferral Program, this is an income-tested benefit — you must fall below the income thresholds to qualify. And unlike the provincial program, it is a straight grant with no title caveat, no loan, and no interest.

How to Apply

Contact Strathcona County Family & Community Services directly. You will need:

  • Identification showing your birth date
  • Proof of income, such as your most recent CRA Notice of Assessment
  • A copy of your most recent property tax notice of assessment

The county processes applications through its own system — this is entirely separate from the provincial SPTDP application.

Combining the Rebate With Provincial Deferral

The $250 county rebate and the provincial Seniors Property Tax Deferral Program are not mutually exclusive. If you qualify for both, the rebate is applied to your property tax account first, reducing the net amount owing. The provincial deferral then covers the remaining balance.

This matters financially: if your annual tax bill is $4,200 and the county rebate brings it down to $3,950, the province defers $3,950 — not $4,200. That means less principal, less interest, and a smaller eventual repayment.

Who Should Apply for Both

If you are a Strathcona County homeowner aged 65 or older with household income below the thresholds, apply for the county rebate first. Then, if your remaining tax bill is still a strain on your fixed income, apply for the provincial deferral to cover the rest.

The two applications go to different offices:

  • County rebate: Strathcona County Family & Community Services
  • Provincial deferral: Alberta Supports (Form SCS0010, mail/fax/online, phone: 1-877-644-9992)

Other Municipalities

Most Alberta municipalities — including Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, and Lethbridge — do not offer an equivalent seniors tax rebate. Calgary has the Property Tax Assistance Program (PTAP), which covers year-over-year tax increases for low-income residents of any age. Edmonton offers a monthly payment plan but no grant. Strathcona County's $250 rebate is among the most generous direct municipal credits in the province.
