Single Parent Council Tax Reduction in Hounslow
Two Reductions Stack in Your Favour
Single parents in Hounslow can claim two separate council tax reductions that work together. The 25% Single Person Discount applies because children under 18 don't count as adults for council tax purposes — so if it's just you and your kids, you qualify. On top of that, Hounslow's income-banded Council Tax Reduction scheme can cover up to 75% of the remaining bill.
These are separate applications. The Single Person Discount is a standard statutory discount. Council Tax Reduction is the local support scheme based on your income. Applying for one doesn't automatically register you for the other.
Higher Income Thresholds for Parents
Hounslow builds a child allowance into the income band thresholds. With one child, every band's upper earnings limit increases by £10 per month. With two or more children, the increase is £30 per month.
For a single parent with one child, Band 1 (75% support) covers earnings up to £389.70 per month, compared to £346.40 for a single adult without children. With two or more children, Band 1 stretches to £476.30.
That extra headroom means a single parent can earn more before dropping to a lower support band. A few extra hours at work don't necessarily cost you the highest level of support.
What the Bill Actually Looks Like
Take a single parent with one child living in a Band C property (£1,858.09 annually in 2025/26). With the 25% Single Person Discount, the net bill drops to about £116.13 per month. If that parent earns £450 per month, they fall into Band 2 (60% support), bringing the monthly payment down to approximately £46.45.
Compare that to the full bill of £154.84 — the combined effect of the discount and council tax reduction saves over £100 a month.

Child Benefit and Maintenance Don't Count
Both Child Benefit and child maintenance are unearned income under Hounslow's scheme, meaning they're completely disregarded. The council looks only at your gross earnings from employment or self-employment. UC standard allowance, child elements, and housing elements are also ignored.
This is particularly important for single parents receiving significant maintenance alongside part-time wages. Your maintenance income has zero impact on which band you're placed in.
Reporting Changes When Children Leave
When a child turns 18 or moves out, two things can change: your Single Person Discount may end (if another adult now lives with you) and your income band thresholds revert to the lower figures. Report the change within 21 days. Failing to notify can result in excess support being clawed back on your next bill.
Our Hounslow Council Tax Reduction guide covers every scenario for lone-parent households, including the child allowance calculations and what happens when your family situation changes.
