NT Concession Scheme Renewal — Manual Forms, 30 June Deadline and Membership Suspension
How Renewals Work
Most NTCS members do not need to do anything at renewal time. The NT Concession and Recognition Unit runs data matching with Centrelink and DVA to verify your eligible payment status is still active. If the automated check confirms your details, your membership rolls forward and concessions continue on your next rate notice without any action from you.
The exception is when the automated system cannot confirm your eligibility. In that case, the NTCRU issues you a manual renewal declaration form. Complete and return it by 30 June, the annual confirmation deadline; failing to do so results in immediate suspension of your concession benefits.
What Happens When Your Membership Is Suspended
If your membership is suspended, the local council stops applying the NTCS rates and garbage concessions to your account. Your next rate notice may arrive without those credits. Check with the NTCRU about the status of any utility concessions, which are administered separately by the utility providers.
This catches people off guard because a missing concession credit on a rate notice may be the first sign that membership was suspended.
How to Reinstate a Suspended Membership
Contact the NTCRU on 1800 777 704 or by email at [email protected]. Ask which information or documents are needed to confirm your current eligibility. Once your eligibility is re-confirmed, the concessions are reinstated going forward. However, the backdating rules apply: you can only claim concessions for the current financial year or six months from when the cost was incurred, whichever is longer.

Protecting Yourself From Lapsing
The risk is highest for members whose Centrelink or DVA payment status changed during the year — for example, someone who temporarily came off Carer Payment and went back on it. Even if you are back on an eligible payment, the data matching might flag your record for manual review.
Three practical steps:
- Watch for a manual renewal declaration from the NTCRU. Complete and return it by 30 June. Do not assume your membership renewed automatically if you receive one.
- Check your July rate notice. If the concession credits are missing, call the NTCRU before paying the full amount — paying in full does not mean you lose the concession, but it does mean you will need to claim a reimbursement instead of a direct credit.
- Keep your details current year-round. Report any change of address, property sale, or payment status change to the NTCRU as soon as it happens. Proactive updates reduce the chance of a manual renewal flag.
