Nottingham Council Tax Rates 2026/27: Every Band from A to H
2026/27 Band D Rate
Nottingham City Council's total Band D council tax for 2026/27 stands at £2,755.39. That figure includes the city council's own charge plus the police and fire authority precepts. It ranks as one of the highest Band D rates in England — roughly 18% above the national average.
The total Band D bill is £99.20 (about 3.7%) higher than in 2025/26. Nottingham City Council's own element rose by 3.5%; the police and fire precepts are separate parts of the total.
Full Band-by-Band Breakdown
Council tax bands are set by the Valuation Office Agency based on a property's estimated value as at 1 April 1991. Each band's charge is a fixed proportion of the Band D rate:
| Band | Property Value (1991) | Proportion of Band D | Approximate Annual Charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Up to £40,000 | 6/9 | £1,837 |
| B | £40,001–£52,000 | 7/9 | £2,143 |
| C | £52,001–£68,000 | 8/9 | £2,449 |
| D | £68,001–£88,000 | 9/9 | £2,755 |
| E | £88,001–£120,000 | 11/9 | £3,368 |
| F | £120,001–£160,000 | 13/9 | £3,980 |
| G | £160,001–£320,000 | 15/9 | £4,592 |
| H | Over £320,000 | 18/9 | £5,511 |
Most Nottingham properties fall in Bands A and B. The majority of Council Tax Reduction claimants are in lower-banded homes, which is relevant because the working-age support scheme caps maximum awards at 80% of Band B liability.
What the Bill Pays For
Your council tax covers multiple authorities. The largest share goes to Nottingham City Council for services including social care, waste collection, highways, and housing. The Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner and the Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Authority each levy separate precepts that appear on the same bill.
As a unitary authority, Nottingham City Council is both the billing authority and the service provider — there is no separate county council precept as there would be in the surrounding Nottinghamshire district areas.

How the Rates Affect Council Tax Reduction
Two scheme rules connect directly to these rates:
The Band B cap means that even if your income qualifies for a full working-age award, the maximum support is calculated against 80% of a Band B charge — approximately £1,714 per year. If you live in a Band C or higher property, you pay the entire difference between your actual bill and that capped amount out of pocket.
The 80% maximum means no working-age claimant receives more than 80% of their eligible liability. Even in a Band A property, you still owe at least 20% of the discounted charge.
For pension-age residents, neither cap applies. The national prescribed scheme allows awards up to 100% of your actual band's charge with no property band cap.
Reducing Your Bill Beyond CTR
If your annual charge feels disproportionate to your home's size or condition, you have options beyond Council Tax Reduction:
A band challenge through the VOA is free and could move your property down a band permanently. A Single Person Discount knocks 25% off the bill before any CTR calculation. And if your property has been adapted for a disabled resident, a Disabled Band Reduction drops your liability to the next lower band's rate.
