Lambeth Council Tax Reduction Savings Limit
If you're a working-age applicant and you and your partner hold £10,000 or more in combined capital, Lambeth refuses your Council Tax Reduction application under the standard scheme. There's no partial reduction, no taper, no tariff income calculation — you're simply out. Understanding exactly what counts toward that threshold is worth a few minutes before you apply.
The £10,000 Rule
Under Lambeth's 2026/27 working-age Council Tax Support scheme, the capital limit is a hard cut-off at £10,000. This applies to the combined capital of you and your partner. If your joint savings sit at £9,999, you qualify for assessment. At £10,000, you don't.
Unlike the old Housing Benefit system, there's no tariff income for capital below the threshold. Savings of £6,000, £8,000, or £9,500 don't reduce your award at all — they're ignored entirely when Lambeth assigns your income band. Only the cliff edge at £10,000 matters.
What Counts as Capital
Lambeth includes:
- Bank accounts — current accounts, savings accounts, and joint accounts
- ISAs — Cash ISAs, Stocks and Shares ISAs, Lifetime ISAs
- Investments — stocks, shares, bonds, and unit trusts
- Property — land or second homes (not your main residence)
- Lump sum payments — redundancy pay, insurance payouts, or inheritance already received
Your main home is excluded. For other assets — including personal possessions, life-insurance surrender values, or business assets — confirm with Lambeth whether they are disregarded before leaving them out of your capital total.
Two Months of Bank Statements
Lambeth requires two consecutive months of statements for every account you and your partner hold. The statements show balances and transactions; keep records that explain large transfers or deposits during that period.

Pensioner Threshold Is Different
If you or your partner have reached State Pension age, the capital rules are more generous. Pension-age applicants fall under the national prescribed scheme, which sets the limit at £16,000 and applies tariff income of £1 per week for each £500 (or part of £500) above £10,000. Mixed-age couples where one partner is working-age and claims Universal Credit are assessed under the working-age £10,000 rule.
What If You're Just Over the Limit?
The scheme sets a £10,000 capital limit. Disclose transfers and withdrawals on your application, and ask Lambeth how it will assess any transaction that changes your capital.
If your capital is marginal and fluctuates around the threshold, check your current balances and include the required two months of statements. Ask Lambeth how it will assess your capital if the balance is changing.
Understand the Full Eligibility Rules
The Lambeth Council Tax Reduction Guide covers the capital limit alongside the income band thresholds, non-dependant deductions, and household composition rules — so you know where you stand before starting the application.
