Free Help with Council Tax in BCP

Free Advice Services in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole

Several organisations provide free help with council tax queries in the BCP area. None of them charge for initial advice, and none require you to buy anything before getting support.

Citizens Advice BCP

Citizens Advice Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole operates physical centres across the conurbation, plus telephone and online advice. They can help with:

  • Checking whether you qualify for Council Tax Reduction
  • Understanding your council tax bill and payment options
  • Navigating the application process
  • Preparing evidence for a claim or appeal
  • Debt advice if you have fallen behind on payments

Demand spikes between March and May when annual bills land, so appointment waits can stretch during peak periods. You can access general guidance through the national Citizens Advice website at any time, or call the BCP office for an appointment.

BCP Council's Own Services

BCP Council's Revenues and Benefits team handles all Council Tax Reduction queries directly. You can:

  • Apply for Council Tax Reduction through the online portal at bcpcouncil.gov.uk
  • Call the benefits team to ask about your claim status or evidence requirements
  • Request a written explanation of how your award was calculated
  • Ask about the 12-month instalment option to spread payments more evenly

If you have already applied and disagree with the decision, request a written reconsideration within one calendar month of the decision notice. If BCP Council upholds its decision, or does not respond within two calendar months, you can appeal to the Valuation Tribunal for England. The appeal must be lodged within two calendar months of the council's response or the end of its response period.

The postal address for the benefits team is: Revenues and Benefits Services, BCP Council Civic Centre, Bourne Avenue, Bournemouth, BH2 6DY.

Online Benefit Calculators

Two free calculators — Turn2us and entitledto — let you estimate benefit entitlement based on the information you enter. They provide estimates, not formal decisions or guarantees of a BCP Council award.

These tools give estimates, not decisions. Only BCP Council can confirm your actual award. But they are useful for checking whether it is worth applying, especially if your circumstances are borderline.

National Helplines

For general benefits queries, these national resources offer free guidance:

  • Gov.uk — the government's benefits pages route you to BCP Council for local council tax support, but cover national schemes like Pension Credit and Universal Credit
  • MoneyHelper — free, impartial guidance on money issues; check its current online contact details for live support

When Paid Help Is Not Necessary

Some commercial services charge fees to fill in council tax applications or check whether you are in the right band. For Council Tax Reduction applications, the BCP Council portal is straightforward and Citizens Advice can help if you get stuck — there is no advantage to paying someone to submit the same form.

For property band challenges (checking whether your home is in the right council tax band), the Valuation Office Agency's proposal process is free. Paid firms that take a percentage of any refund are offering a service you can do yourself at no cost.

The step-by-step BCP Council Tax Reduction guide covers the full claim process from eligibility through to appeal if you want to work through it methodically.
