Documents Needed for Council Tax Reduction in Doncaster

Missing one document can stall your entire Council Tax Reduction claim. Doncaster Council gives you one calendar month from the date you submit your application to provide all supporting evidence. Miss that window and your claim gets closed — you'd have to start again with a new application date, losing weeks or months of support.

Here's every document you need, why the council asks for it, and how to submit it without delays.

Identity and Address

You need one of the following to confirm who you are and where you live:

  • Valid passport
  • Photo driving licence
  • Official utility bill
  • Tenancy agreement or mortgage statement

The council needs to confirm you're the person liable for Council Tax at the property. If you've recently moved, bring proof of your new address even if the council already has your Council Tax account.

Income Evidence

The type of evidence depends on how you earn money:

Employed: Five consecutive weekly payslips, or two monthly payslips. They need to be recent — ideally covering the period immediately before your application date. If your payslips are digital (from a portal like ADP or Sage), screenshots or PDF downloads are accepted.

Self-employed: Your most recent set of audited accounts.

Universal Credit: Your most recent UC payment breakdown statement from your online journal. This needs to show each element separately — standard allowance, housing costs, childcare, limited capability for work. A simple "you've been paid £X" notification isn't enough.

Other state benefits: DWP award letters for any benefits you receive — Employment and Support Allowance, Jobseeker's Allowance, Carer's Allowance, or any other.

Child Benefit and maintenance: Your Child Benefit award notice, and evidence of any child maintenance or spousal maintenance received. Doncaster counts both at 100% as income, so the council needs to see the amounts.

Bank Statements

This is the document that causes the most delays. Doncaster Council requires two consecutive months of full statements for every bank account you hold — current accounts, savings accounts, joint accounts, cash ISAs, and investment accounts.

"Full statements" means complete — every transaction visible, with opening and closing balances. The council won't accept a screenshot of your current balance or a partial statement with transactions redacted.

If you bank online, download the statements as PDFs. If you need paper statements, order them from your bank now — they can take 5–10 working days to arrive by post.

The council uses bank statements to verify your capital is below the £16,000 limit and to cross-check your declared income. An undisclosed account doesn't just delay your claim — it can trigger a fraud investigation.

How to Submit Your Documents

Doncaster Council accepts evidence through three channels:

Online upload: The fastest route. During your application on the council's portal, use the "upload and attach" feature to submit digital copies, high-resolution photos, or scanned documents. JPG, PNG, and PDF formats all work.

In person at the Civic Office: Take your original documents to the Civic Office at Waterdale, Doncaster, DN1 3BU. Customer service staff verify, record, and return originals on the spot.

By post: Send originals to the Revenues and Benefits team. The council requires original documents for postal submissions — photocopies are rejected. If posting originals makes you nervous (justifiably), use the online upload or visit in person instead.

The One-Calendar-Month Rule

Submit your application form immediately, even if you're still gathering documents. Your claim date — and therefore your award start date — is set by when the form arrives, not when your evidence is complete.

You then have one calendar month to provide everything outstanding. If you're waiting on bank statements from your bank, chase them. If you can't get a document in time, call the Benefits helpline (01302 735336, Option 1) promptly to explain what is outstanding; the evidence window is one calendar month.

Prepare Before You Apply

Our Doncaster Council Tax Reduction guide includes a pre-submission Document Audit Checklist that walks through every evidence requirement by category, so you can confirm you have everything before you click submit. It's the difference between a clean application and a one-month scramble.
