Croydon Council Tax Reduction for Lone Parents: The 80% Tier Explained
How Lone Parents Get a Higher Maximum Discount
Croydon's working-age Council Tax Reduction scheme uses three columns in its income band table: one for disabled non-working residents (up to 100%), one for lone parents with a child under five (up to 80%), and one for all other working-age claimants (up to 75%).
If you are a single parent with at least one child under five, you are assessed under the lone-parent column. That gives you a higher discount at every income band compared to the standard working-age rate:
| Weekly net income | Lone parent (child under 5) | Standard working age |
|---|---|---|
| £0 – £157.99 | 80% | 75% |
| £158 – £207.99 | 70% | 60% |
| £208 – £257.99 | 60% | 40% |
| £258 – £307.99 | 50% | 30% |
| £308 – £357.99 | 40% | 20% |
| £358 – £407.99 | 30% | 15% |
| £408 – £457.99 | 20% | 10% |
| £458+ | 0% | 0% |
The gap is biggest in the middle bands. At £220 per week, a lone parent with a young child gets 60% off their Council Tax. A standard claimant at the same income gets 40%. On a Band D property in Croydon, that is roughly £520 per year difference.
When the Protection Ends
The enhanced tier applies only while your youngest child is under five. On the day your youngest turns five, you move to the standard working-age column. If you were receiving a 70% discount at Band 2, you would drop to 60% — or if you were at Band 3, from 60% to 40%.
This change can affect your award. Report it to Croydon Council within 21 days, and check the revised bill so you can plan for the higher amount.
Lone Parents Also Get the Single Person Discount
If you are the only adult in your household (children under 18 do not count), you qualify for the standard 25% single person discount on top of your Council Tax Reduction. The two reliefs stack: the Council Tax Reduction percentage is applied to the bill after the single person discount has been deducted.
You do need to claim both separately. The single person discount is claimed through the council tax section of Croydon's website; the Council Tax Reduction application goes through the benefits portal.

How to Apply
Apply through Croydon's My Account portal. You will need proof of your income, bank statements for the last two months, your child's birth certificate or Child Benefit award letter (which confirms the child's age), and your Council Tax reference number.
If you have been a lone parent for a while but never claimed, you can apply now. Backdating is limited to one month for working-age initial claims where you can show good cause for the delay.
