Croydon Council Tax Bands: Full List and Band D Rate for 2026/27

How Council Tax Bands Work

Every domestic property in England is placed in one of eight bands (A through H) by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA). The band reflects the property's estimated open-market value as of 1 April 1991 — not its current value.

Band 1991 valuation range Ratio to Band D
A Up to £40,000 6/9
B £40,001 – £52,000 7/9
C £52,001 – £68,000 8/9
D £68,001 – £88,000 9/9 (reference)
E £88,001 – £120,000 11/9
F £120,001 – £160,000 13/9
G £160,001 – £320,000 15/9
H Over £320,000 18/9

Band D is the reference point. Every other band's charge is a fixed fraction of Band D. Band A residents pay two-thirds of the Band D charge; Band H residents pay double.

Croydon's Band D Rate

Croydon's combined Band D charge for 2026/27 is £2,599.91, which includes Croydon Council's own charge plus the Greater London Authority (GLA) precept for the Metropolitan Police, Transport for London, the London Fire Brigade, and the Mayor's Office.

This figure has risen sharply — roughly 23% since 2023 — following the council's Section 114 financial emergency and subsequent maximum permitted annual increases.

Why the Band D Cap Matters for Council Tax Reduction

Croydon's working-age Council Tax Reduction scheme caps awards at the Band D rate for non-protected claimants. If you live in a Band E, F, G, or H property and receive Council Tax Reduction, the percentage discount is calculated against what a Band D property would cost — not your actual higher band.

You are personally responsible for 100% of the difference between the Band D charge and your actual band charge, plus the remaining percentage after the discount.

For example, if your Band F property costs £3,755.42 per year and the Band D rate is £2,599.91, a 60% discount is calculated on £2,599.91 (giving you £1,559.95 off). Your actual bill would be £3,755.42 minus £1,559.95 = £2,195.47. Without the Band D cap, the discount would be 60% of £3,755.42 = £2,253.25 off, leaving you with £1,502.17.

The Band D cap does not apply to disabled non-working residents who receive 100% protection, or to pension-age claimants under the nationally prescribed rules.

Checking Your Band

You can check your property's council tax band on the VOA's website for free. If you think your band is too high — because your property was valued incorrectly, because comparable properties nearby are in a lower band, or because structural changes have reduced its value — you can challenge it through the free official route via the VOA.

The Croydon council tax band challenge post covers the full process for disputing your band. For help understanding how your band interacts with the income bands and discount percentages in the Council Tax Reduction scheme, the Croydon Council Tax Reduction guide has worked examples for different band and income combinations.
