Council Tax Reduction in Nottingham for Pensioners
A Completely Different Scheme
If you have reached State Pension age, your Council Tax Reduction in Nottingham is governed by national regulations — not by Nottingham City Council's local working-age scheme. Parliament sets the rules, and the council administers them. This matters because the national prescribed scheme is substantially more generous on every parameter that counts.
How Pension-Age Rules Compare
| Parameter | Pension-Age (National) | Working-Age (Nottingham Local) |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum award | Up to 100% of actual liability | Capped at 80% of Band B |
| Capital limit | £16,000 | £6,000 |
| Band cap | None — actual property band used | Band B cap on Bands C–H |
| Minimum award | £0.50 per week | £5.00 per week |
| Backdating | 3 months automatic | 1 month, requires proof of good cause |
The differences are stark. A pensioner in a Band D property with savings of £10,000 and a low income can receive a full award covering their entire council tax bill. A working-age resident in the same property with the same savings gets nothing — the £6,000 capital ceiling excludes them entirely.
Who Counts as Pension Age
You qualify under the pension-age scheme if you (or your partner, in a couple) have reached the qualifying age for State Pension Credit. The qualifying age depends on your date of birth; check it with the State Pension age calculator on GOV.UK. If one partner is below pension age and the other above, the younger partner's age determines which scheme applies — meaning mixed-age couples usually fall under the less generous working-age scheme.
The pension-age scheme applies once you meet the qualifying age.

Guarantee Credit Changes Everything
If you receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, the £16,000 capital limit does not apply. Savings above that amount do not by themselves exclude you from Council Tax Reduction; the council still assesses the rest of your claim. This benefit can unlock a full 100% award for pensioners who might otherwise have too much capital.
If you are not yet claiming Pension Credit, it is worth checking your entitlement through the Pension Credit calculator on gov.uk. Many eligible pensioners do not claim, and securing Guarantee Credit can mean zero council tax alongside other passported benefits.
How to Apply in Nottingham
The application process is the same portal as for working-age residents — myaccount.nottinghamcity.gov.uk — but the council applies the national pension-age rules to your claim automatically based on your date of birth. You need proof of identity, your State Pension or Pension Credit award letter, and two months of bank statements.
The council aims to process complete claims within around 14 days. Unlike working-age claimants, pensioners get automatic backdating for up to three months without needing to prove good cause, provided they met the age eligibility rules throughout that period.
Pensioners in Higher Bands
Because there is no property band cap for pension-age claimants, pensioners in Band D, E, or F properties can receive support based on their actual liability. A working-age resident in the same Band D home would have their award capped at 80% of Band B — a difference of hundreds of pounds per year.
If you are approaching pension age and currently receiving working-age Council Tax Reduction, you do not need to reapply. Nottingham City Council should reassess your claim automatically when you reach the qualifying age. Verify this by checking your revised bill after your birthday passes. If the assessment still shows working-age parameters, contact the council through their online form to request a reassessment.
