How to Check Your Council Tax Band in Wales Is Correct
Three Ways to Look Up Your Band
Online — The VOA's band lookup tool on GOV.UK is the fastest option. Enter your postcode and you'll see every domestic property on your street, its current band, and which billing authority collects the tax. The list covers all 22 Welsh councils.
By phone — Call the Valuation Office on 03000 505 505. They can confirm your band and provide basic property attribute information. The Welsh Language Standards mean you can conduct the call entirely in Welsh if you prefer.
In person — The compiled valuation list is available for physical inspection at your local billing authority's principal offices. This is mainly useful for householders without reliable internet access.
How to Tell If Your Band Might Be Wrong
Looking up your own band is step one. The real question is whether it's correct, and that requires comparing your property against similar homes in the area.
On the VOA lookup tool, check every property on your street and the surrounding streets. Focus on homes that match yours in type (detached, semi, terraced), size (number of bedrooms and rough floor area), and age (same construction era). If most similar properties sit in a lower band, something may be off.
A single neighbour in a lower band isn't enough — that property might be smaller, older, or have fewer rooms. What you're looking for is a pattern: several homes of the same type and size, built at the same time, sitting one or two bands below yours.
Request Your Property Attribute Data
The VOA holds specific data on every banded property — recorded floor area, number of rooms, property type, age code, and any features that affect the valuation. You can request this Property Attribute Data (PAD) free of charge by calling 03000 505 505 or through the online portal.
Compare the PAD against what you actually have. If the VOA records a larger floor area than your property actually measures, or lists features (like an extra bedroom or a garage) that don't exist, that's a concrete discrepancy worth investigating.
Request PAD for the comparable properties you've identified too. This helps you build an evidence base showing that your property and a lower-banded neighbour are essentially the same on paper.

What If Your Band Looks Wrong?
If the comparisons suggest your band is too high, the next step depends on your situation. New occupiers within six months have a statutory right to submit a formal proposal. Longer-term residents can request an informal band review unless another statutory ground for a formal proposal applies. Both routes go through the VOA, not the council.
Before submitting anything, check for potential upward risk — if your property has an unrecorded extension or conversion and a relevant transaction, such as a sale, has occurred since the work, a challenge could draw attention to it and risk an upward band alteration.
The Challenging Your Council Tax Band in Wales guide covers the full lookup-to-challenge process, including PAD comparison templates and a pre-submission risk check.
