Backdate Council Tax Reduction in Nottingham
Working-Age Backdating: One Month Maximum
Nottingham City Council allows working-age Council Tax Support to be backdated by a maximum of one month before the date your written backdating request is received. Not one month before you first became eligible — one month before you asked.
This is far shorter than many residents expect. Pension-age applicants get three months of automatic backdating with no questions asked. Working-age applicants must prove continuous good cause for the entire period they are requesting, and if any part of the explanation does not hold up, the backdating is refused.
What Counts as Continuous Good Cause
The legal threshold is narrow. You must demonstrate that something prevented you from applying during every week of the backdating period. Accepted reasons include:
- Severe illness or hospitalisation that physically prevented you from making a claim
- Unexpected bereavement that disrupted your ability to manage administrative tasks
- Official misinformation — a council officer, DWP adviser, or official helpline gave you incorrect advice that led you to believe you did not need to apply
Unawareness of the scheme rules or financial illiteracy does not meet the legal test for good cause. The council considers whether your reason explains the whole period; include the specific circumstances and any evidence you have.
How to Submit a Backdating Request
Include the backdating request with your Council Tax Support application — there is a section on the online form for it. If you have already submitted an application and want to add a backdating request afterwards, put it in writing and send it to Admail 4270, Nottingham, NG1 9YZ, or through the online contact form.
The request must state:
- The exact period you want backdated (dates)
- The specific reason you could not apply during that period
- Any supporting evidence — hospital discharge letters, GP notes, records of the misinformation you received
A vague statement like "I didn't know about the scheme" does not meet the stated test. A specific statement like "I was admitted to Queen's Medical Centre on [date] and discharged on [date], and was unable to access the online portal during this time" supported by hospital documentation gives the council evidence to assess against the continuous-good-cause test.

Pension-Age Applicants: No Hurdle
If you have reached State Pension qualifying age, your Council Tax Support is automatically backdated up to three months without any good cause requirement. You do not need to request it or provide reasons — the council applies the three-month lookback as standard.
What Backdating Is Worth
Even one month of backdating can recover a meaningful amount. If your monthly council tax instalment is £150 and the maximum award covers 80% of a Band B liability, the backdated credit could be worth £80–120 depending on your circumstances.
The Nottingham Council Tax Reduction guide includes a backdating request template and evidence checklist to help you present continuous good cause in the format the council's assessors expect.
