Waltham Forest Council Tax Support Income Bands 2026/27: How Much Will You Get?
The Five Income Bands and What They Pay
Waltham Forest ditched its old means-tested Council Tax Support calculation in April 2025 and moved to an income-banded scheme. Instead of a complex formula, the council checks your net weekly household income against a grid and drops you into one of five bands. Each band gives a fixed percentage reduction on your council tax.
Here's the 2026/27 grid for standard working-age households:
| Band | Reduction | Single | Couple | Single + 1 child | Couple + 1 child | Single + 2+ children | Couple + 2+ children |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 57% | Under £120.01 | Under £140.01 | Under £140.01 | Under £160.01 | Under £160.01 | Under £180.01 |
| 2 | 47% | £120.01–£170 | £140.01–£190 | £140.01–£190 | £160.01–£210 | £160.01–£210 | £180.01–£230 |
| 3 | 37% | £170.01–£210 | £190.01–£230 | £190.01–£230 | £210.01–£250 | £210.01–£250 | £230.01–£270 |
| 4 | 27% | £210.01–£250 | £230.01–£270 | £230.01–£270 | £250.01–£290 | £250.01–£290 | £270.01–£310 |
| 5 | 17% | £250.01–£290 | £270.01–£310 | £270.01–£310 | £290.01–£330 | £290.01–£330 | £310.01–£350 |
Earn above the Band 5 ceiling for your household type and you receive nothing.
The 43% Minimum Payment
At Band 1 — the highest standard award — you still pay 43% of your council tax. That's the mandatory minimum contribution for non-vulnerable working-age households. On a Band C property in Waltham Forest (£2,121.74 per year), 43% works out to roughly £17.50 per week.
Financially vulnerable households get up to 85% reduction, bringing their minimum payment down to 15%. A vulnerable resident in a Band A property with the single person discount would pay as little as £3.43 per week.
How Net Weekly Income Is Calculated
The income figure the council uses isn't your gross pay. They start with your earnings after income tax, National Insurance, and half of any eligible pension contributions are deducted. Universal Credit elements count as income, but certain benefits are fully disregarded — PIP and DLA aren't counted at all, and neither is Child Benefit.
For self-employed residents, the council looks at net profit from your most recent trading accounts or a 12-month profit-and-loss statement. If those aren't available, they may apply a minimum income assumption.
The tricky part for variable-hours workers: a rise in assessed earnings can push you into a lower-support band, while a fall can move you the other way. The council says you must report changes within 21 days; its DWP data feeds do not replace your reporting duty.

A Quick Example
Say you're a single parent with one child aged 8, living in a Band C property. You earn £155 net per week, and you're not in a protected group (child is over 6, no disability benefits).
Your column is "Single + 1 child," and £155 falls between £140.01 and £190.00 — Band 2, which gives 47% reduction. The single person discount brings your weekly bill down to £30.52. Your Council Tax Support is 47% of that: £14.34 per week. You'd pay £16.18 per week, or about £843 for the year.
