Universal Credit and Council Tax Reduction in Hounslow
UC Does Not Cover Your Council Tax
This catches thousands of people off guard every year. When you claim Universal Credit, the DWP sends a notification to Hounslow Council — but that notification is just informational. It does not register a Council Tax Reduction claim on your behalf. You have to apply separately through the Hounslow portal.
Until you submit that separate application, you're liable for the full council tax bill. Missed payments while waiting for UC to "sort itself out" can quickly escalate to reminder notices, a final demand, and eventually a court summons.
How Hounslow Assesses UC Claimants
Hounslow's income-banded scheme ignores your total UC award completely. The council uses DWP data-sharing feeds to verify earned income. Everything else — the UC standard allowance, housing element, child element, LCWRA element — is classified as unearned income and disregarded.
If you have zero earned income while on UC, you go straight into Band 1 with 75% council tax support. That's the maximum for working-age residents in Hounslow.
If you do work alongside UC, only your gross monthly earnings determine your band. A single person earning £400 per month lands in Band 2 (60% support). The UC taper reducing your award has no effect on the council tax calculation — Hounslow looks at gross earnings, not what UC pays you after the taper.
The One-Month Linking Rule
This is the one timing rule you cannot afford to miss. If you apply for Council Tax Reduction within one calendar month of your UC claim date, Hounslow backdates your council tax support to match when your UC started. Miss that window and your CTS only runs from the Monday after your application.
On a Band D property, one month of lost Band 1 support is roughly £130 you won't get back.

What to Do When Your UC Assessment Period Changes
UC assessment periods don't align with calendar months, and earnings can fluctuate from one period to the next. Each change in your earned income could shift your council tax support band. Hounslow receives automated UC data, but you're still legally required to report income changes within 21 days.
If your hours vary — say you're on a zero-hours contract — your band may jump between months. The council recalculates each time and issues revised bills.
Moving to Hounslow While on UC
Already on UC and moving into the borough? Your existing UC claim continues, but you need a fresh Council Tax Reduction application to Hounslow. Support doesn't transfer between councils. Apply in the same calendar week your Hounslow liability begins to get your award backdated to that exact date.
Our Hounslow Council Tax Reduction guide walks through the entire UC interaction step by step, including how to read your UC statement for the figures Hounslow actually uses.
