Sandwell Council Tax Rates and Bands 2026/27 — What Every Band Pays
2026/27 Council Tax Charges by Band
Sandwell's council tax for 2026/27 covers the borough council, the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, and the West Midlands Fire and Rescue Authority. Here are the full annual charges across all eight valuation bands:
- Band A: £1,496.30
- Band B: £1,745.70
- Band C: £1,995.08
- Band D: £2,244.46
- Band E: £2,743.22
- Band F: £3,242.00
- Band G: £3,740.77
- Band H: £4,488.92
Band D is the reference point — every other band is calculated as a fraction or multiple of it. Band A is six-ninths of Band D, Band H is twice Band D, and everything else falls in between.
Most Sandwell properties sit in Bands A and B. The borough has some of the lowest property values in the West Midlands, so the majority of residents pay at the lower end of this scale.
Single Person Discount
If you're the only adult in your property (or the only one who isn't "disregarded" for council tax purposes — students, people with severe mental impairment, and certain carers are all disregarded), you can apply for a 25% discount on your council tax bill. After the discount:
- Band A: £1,122.23
- Band B: £1,309.28
- Band C: £1,496.31
- Band D: £1,683.35
The single person discount is applied before Council Tax Reduction is calculated, so it reduces the base figure that the 85% cap and Band B restriction work from.
How Council Tax Bands Are Set
Your property's band was set by the Valuation Office Agency based on what the property would have sold for on 1 April 1991 — not what it's worth now. A Band A property was valued at under £40,000 in 1991 terms; Band H was over £320,000.
If you think your band is wrong (perhaps because of a major structural change to the property, or because similar neighbouring properties are in a lower band), you can challenge it directly with the VOA for free. Commercial "band challenge" firms charge 30–40% plus VAT of any refund — the official route costs nothing.

What Your Bill Actually Funds
The council tax bill isn't just one charge. Sandwell's 2026/27 Band D figure of £2,244.46 breaks down across three precepting authorities. The borough council takes the largest share (covering social care, waste collection, roads, libraries, and housing services), with smaller amounts going to policing and fire services.
Your annual demand notice — the bill that arrives in March or April — shows this breakdown and sets out your monthly instalment schedule. By default, you pay over 10 months (April to January), but you can request to spread it across 12 months by contacting the council tax billing team.
The Band B Cap for CTR Claimants
If you're claiming Council Tax Reduction as a working-age resident, Sandwell caps your eligible liability at the Band B rate regardless of your actual property band. This means a Band D resident's CTR is calculated on £1,745.70, not on £2,244.46. The resident pays the full difference between their actual band charge and the Band B charge out of pocket, plus the 15% minimum payment on the Band B amount.
The practical impact is significant at higher bands. A working-age claimant in a Band E property on maximum CTR still owes £1,259.38 per year — over £100 a month — because the gap between Band E (£2,743.22) and Band B (£1,745.70) is nearly £1,000 that CTR doesn't cover.
Our Sandwell Council Tax Reduction guide includes a full liability table showing the minimum payment at every band, with and without the single person discount, so you can see exactly what you'd owe under maximum CTR.
