Redbridge Council Tax Refund and Overpayment: How to Get Your Money Back

You've been awarded Council Tax Reduction, or your band was corrected, or you moved out mid-year — and now your Redbridge council tax account shows a credit. The natural question: when do you get the money back? The answer depends on whether you have any outstanding council tax liabilities elsewhere on your account.

How Redbridge Handles Overpayment Credits

When a Council Tax Reduction award is applied to your account — especially a backdated award covering months you've already paid at the full rate — the council recalculates your annual liability and adjusts accordingly. The credit appears on your account, and one of two things happens:

If your account is not yet fully paid: Redbridge applies the credit against future Council Tax instalments for that financial year. Cash refunds are issued only when the account is fully settled and there are no prior arrears across other billing years.

If arrears remain, do not assume the credit will be paid out in cash. Redbridge's stated refund condition is that the account must be fully settled and have no prior arrears across other billing years.

Backdated CTR Awards and Refund Timing

A backdated CTR award can create a substantial credit. Redbridge allows working-age applicants to backdate claims by up to 12 months with continuous good cause; pension-age claims follow separate rules. If you've been paying full council tax for months while eligible for a 50%–73% reduction, the backdate can effectively reverse those payments.

Once CTR is awarded, Redbridge adjusts your Council Tax account and remaining instalments. Check the revised bill for the credit and any updated payment amounts.

Band Reductions and VOA Corrections

If the Valuation Office Agency corrects your property's council tax band — either through your own challenge or a routine revaluation — the correction applies from the date the error began, which can go back years. The council recalculates each affected year's bill at the correct band rate, and any overpayment across all those years generates a credit.

These multi-year corrections can produce large refunds. The council applies the same offset rule: arrears on any year are cleared first, and the net balance is refunded.

Similarly, a disability band reduction (which lowers your assessed band by one tier) generates a credit from the date the qualifying conditions were first met. If that date was years ago, the overpayment can be significant.

CTR Overpayments: When the Council Wants Money Back

The flip side of refunds: if your circumstances changed and you received more CTR than you were entitled to, the council recovers the overpayment by increasing your remaining council tax bill. You'll receive a revised bill showing the higher amount.

Common triggers for CTR overpayments:

  • Your income increased but you did not report it promptly
  • A non-dependant moved in, increasing the deductions applied to your award
  • Your savings crossed the £16,000 threshold
  • You moved out of Redbridge but didn't notify the council

If the revised bill creates hardship, contact the revenues team to discuss a payment arrangement. And if you believe the overpayment decision is wrong — perhaps the council used incorrect income figures — you can request an internal review and, if necessary, appeal to the Valuation Tribunal for England.

How to Request a Refund

If your account shows a credit and it hasn't been automatically refunded or applied to future instalments within a few weeks:

  1. Log into your Redbridge council tax online account and check the balance
  2. Call the revenues team and ask them to confirm the credit and process a refund
  3. If you've moved out of Redbridge, provide your forwarding address and bank details for the refund

Redbridge's stated rule is that cash refunds are issued only when the account is fully settled and there are no prior arrears across other billing years. If you need to confirm how a credit will be applied, put your request in writing and include your Council Tax account number.

Check Whether You're Owed a Reduction

If you've been paying full council tax in Redbridge while on a low income, on Universal Credit, or receiving disability benefits, you may have months of overpayment waiting to be credited. Redbridge's CTR scheme can reduce your bill by 36% to 73% depending on your circumstances, and awards can be backdated up to 12 months.
