Nova Scotia Property Tax Rebate: Out-of-Province Help and the Municipal Property Tax Sheet
What the Municipal Property Tax Sheet Is and When You Need It
The Property Tax Rebate for Seniors requires Service Nova Scotia to verify that your municipal property taxes are paid in full for the preceding year. How that verification happens depends on where your property is located.
Many Nova Scotia municipalities share tax payment data electronically with Service Nova Scotia. If your municipality is in this group, you don't need to do anything extra — Service Nova Scotia can confirm your tax status automatically when it processes your application.
If your municipality does not share data electronically, you need either a paid-in-full tax receipt from your municipal tax office or a completed Municipal Property Tax Sheet. The Municipal Property Tax Sheet is a specific provincial form that your municipal tax collector fills out, confirming the property's residential tax charges, any exemptions applied, and that the account has a zero balance.
Which Municipalities Exchange Data Electronically
The following municipalities currently participate in electronic data sharing with Service Nova Scotia: Halifax Regional Municipality, Cape Breton Regional Municipality, Kings County, Lunenburg, Colchester, Argyle, Barrington, Clare, Digby, East Hants, Shelburne, Yarmouth, Queens, Annapolis, Antigonish, Pictou, and Richmond.
If your municipality is on this list, you can apply for the rebate without attaching paper tax receipts. Service Nova Scotia verifies your account status directly through the data exchange.
If your municipality isn't listed, contact your local tax office for an official paid-in-full receipt or a completed Municipal Property Tax Sheet. If the office is unfamiliar with the provincial form, ask Service Nova Scotia whether the receipt is sufficient for your application.
Managing the Application From Out of Province
Adult children or family helpers managing the rebate application from outside Nova Scotia face a practical challenge: getting the municipal tax documentation when you can't visit the office in person.
Here's how to handle it:
For electronic-sharing municipalities: Nothing extra is needed. If your parent lives in Halifax, Cape Breton, Lunenburg, or another participating municipality, the data exchange handles verification automatically.
For non-electronic municipalities: Call the municipal tax office directly. Explain that you're helping a family member apply for the Property Tax Rebate for Seniors and need a paid-in-full receipt or a completed Municipal Property Tax Sheet. Most offices can mail it to you or to your parent's address.
Submitting the application remotely: The application can be mailed to Property Tax Rebate for Seniors, PO Box 283, CRO, Halifax, NS, B3J 2N7 from anywhere. It can also be submitted online through the Nova Scotia Government portal. Your parent needs to sign the form — or you need to attach Power of Attorney documentation if signing on their behalf.
Checking application status: Contact Access Nova Scotia by phone to ask whether your application has been received and to request a status update. This is helpful when you're coordinating from a distance and want to confirm the package arrived.

Avoiding the Most Common Rejection
The most frequent reason applications stall is missing or incomplete tax verification. If you're in a non-electronic municipality, submitting the application without the tax receipt or Municipal Property Tax Sheet will pause processing until Service Nova Scotia receives it — and they'll request it by mail, adding weeks to the timeline.
Get the documentation before you submit. It's the single most impactful step you can take to keep processing on track.
