Newcastle Council Tax Rates 2026/27
Every March, Newcastle City Council publishes its council tax charges for the coming financial year. For 2026/27, Band A — the most common band in Newcastle — comes to £1,693.77 per year, which works out at roughly £32.57 per week. Band D, the benchmark that national statistics use, is £2,540.66 per year.
What Each Band Costs in 2026/27
Council tax bands are set by the Valuation Office Agency based on what your property would have sold for in April 1991. Newcastle's full annual charges for 2026/27:
- Band A — £1,693.77/year (£141.15/month over 12 instalments)
- Band D — £2,540.66/year (£211.72/month)
Bands B, C, E, F, G, and H are proportional fractions of Band D, scaling from roughly two-thirds (Band A) up to twice (Band H).
If you think your property is in the wrong band, you can challenge it directly with the Valuation Office Agency at no cost.
How Council Tax Support Reduces These Charges
Working-age Newcastle residents on low incomes can apply for Council Tax Support, which knocks a percentage off the net bill after any discounts like the Single Person Discount are applied. The discount depends on which income band you fall into under the council's local scheme:
- Band 1 — 100% discount (zero to pay)
- Band 2 — 90% discount
- Band 3 — 85% discount
- Band 4 — 50% discount
- Band 5 — 25% discount
So a single person in a Band A property paying £1,270.33 after their 25% Single Person Discount could have their bill cut by 90% under CTS Band 2 — leaving roughly £127 per year, or about £10.60 per month.
Spreading Payments Over 12 Months
By default, Newcastle collects council tax over 10 monthly instalments from April to January. You have a legal right to request 12 monthly instalments instead, which lowers each payment. Email [email protected] or submit the request through the online portal.

Checking Whether You Qualify for a Reduction
The income limits that determine your CTS band depend on your household size — single person, couple, family with one child, or family with two or more children. The thresholds are adjusted every year using the September Retail Price Index.
