Free Council Tax Advice in Nottingham: Every Agency and How to Reach Them

Citizens Advice Nottinghamshire Central and South (CANCAS)

CANCAS is the main free advice provider in Nottingham, formed in April 2026 from the merger of Citizens Advice Nottingham & District and Citizens Advice Central Nottinghamshire. They handle council tax queries, benefit checks, and debt casework at no charge.

Helpline: 0808 278 7974 (Monday to Friday, subject to call volumes and triage queues)

Drop-in advice: Nottingham Central Library foyer, 1 Carrington Street, NG1 7FH — Mondays and Thursdays, 10 am to 2:30 pm. These are brief triage sessions, not full appointments. If your query is complex, the triage adviser will book you a follow-up.

Face-to-face general advice from their main office has been discontinued. Specialist in-person appointments are reserved for complex debt cases, so if you are facing a court summons or liability order for unpaid council tax, make that clear when you call the helpline — you are more likely to get a face-to-face slot.

The Advice Nottingham Network

Advice Nottingham is a consortium of six independent advice agencies spread across the city. Each centre provides free welfare rights support, benefit advocacy, and help with council tax claims and appeals.

Agency Phone Location Hours

Nottingham Law Centre 0115 978 7813 119 Radford Road, NG7 5DU Specialist welfare and housing legal help

Pick the centre nearest to you. If you live in St Ann's, Bestwood, the Meadows, or Clifton, the local centre will usually have shorter wait times than CANCAS's central service.

Nottingham Law Centre

The Law Centre provides specialist legal representation for social security appeals, including Council Tax Reduction disputes that reach the Valuation Tribunal. Unlike general advice agencies, they can represent you at a tribunal hearing.

Contact them on 0115 978 7813 if your CTR claim has been refused, you have been through the council's internal review, and you want legal support for a formal VTE appeal. They do not charge for this service.

What Free Agencies Can Do

These agencies can help you:

  • Check your entitlement using professional benefits calculators and their knowledge of Nottingham's local scheme parameters
  • Gather and verify your evidence before you submit an application
  • Submit a claim through the council's portal with you or on your behalf
  • Challenge a decision by writing to the council for an internal review
  • Represent you at a Valuation Tribunal hearing (Law Centre specifically)
  • Set up Breathing Space if you are in council tax debt — a 60-day legal pause on enforcement

The practical limit is capacity. Demand consistently outstrips supply, and working-age claimants seeking routine help to organise and submit an online CTR claim often face weeks of waiting for an appointment.

When Free Advice Is Not Enough

If you need immediate help organising your claim and cannot wait for an agency appointment, the Nottingham Council Tax Reduction guide walks through the same process the agencies would help you with — the evidence checklist, the application steps, the means-test calculation, and the appeal route — in a structured printable format.

The guide is not a substitute for specialist legal advice on complex disputes. If you are facing enforcement action, always contact StepChange (0800 138 1111) or National Debtline (0808 808 4000) for free debt advice before anything else.
