How to Apply for Coventry Council Tax Support Online via MyAccount

Coventry City Council handles council tax support applications through its online benefits portal. The process is straightforward once you know which form to use and what documents to have ready — but the portal routing confuses people, and there's a separate form for Universal Credit claimants that's easy to miss.

Which Form Do You Need?

Coventry runs two distinct online application routes:

Standard application — for residents not on Universal Credit, or those claiming Housing Benefit alongside council tax support. This is the main benefits portal at coventry.gov.uk/benefitsclaim.

Universal Credit application — a dedicated shorter form specifically for active UC recipients, at coventry.gov.uk/counciltaxsupportuniversalcredit. This form skips the housing fields already submitted to the DWP and asks for your UC statement details instead.

Using the wrong form won't disqualify you, but it can delay processing if the benefits team needs to request additional information that the correct form would have captured upfront.

Setting Up MyAccount

Both forms route through Coventry's MyAccount system. If you don't already have an account, you'll need to create one with a valid email address. The portal occasionally times out on mobile devices — if you hit a blank screen, try switching to a desktop browser or clearing your cookies.

Once logged in, the application asks for household details, income and employment information, benefit details, and capital/savings figures. Have your National Insurance number ready — it's mandatory for both you and your partner.

Documents to Upload

You can upload supporting evidence directly during the application or email it separately to [email protected] with your claim reference number in the subject line. The council needs:

  • Identity: passport, driving licence, or birth certificate
  • Earnings: five consecutive weekly payslips or two monthly payslips showing gross pay, tax, NI and pension deductions
  • Self-employed: audited accounts or Coventry's Certificate of Earnings Form
  • Bank accounts: two consecutive months of statements for every account (including zero-balance and overdrawn accounts)
  • Benefits: full Universal Credit statement or other benefit award letters
  • Non-dependant income: payslips or benefit proof for any other adults in the household

Offline Alternatives

Not everyone can navigate the online portal. Coventry provides offline routes:

  • Phone: call the Benefits Helpline on 024 7683 1800 for assisted digital support — an adviser can walk you through the application over the phone
  • Post: send completed paper forms and physical documents to Benefits Service, PO Box 7097, Coventry, CV6 9SL
  • In person: Coventry Central Library has public computers available if you need internet access to complete the form

After You Submit

The council aims to process complete applications within two to four weeks. Your claim starts from the Monday after they receive it. If you need the award backdated — because you were eligible earlier but didn't apply — you must request this explicitly. Working-age claimants can backdate up to 12 months with continuous good cause; pensioners get an automatic three-month backdate.

The Coventry Council Tax Reduction Guide walks through the full portal process with screenshots of each stage, plus a printable document checklist so you can gather everything before you log in.
